Comments: I need help.....My father-in-law (James Jones) served on the Gurke back in the '50's and retired as a CPO in the '70's. We are buying him a leather Navy jacket for Christmas and are trying to get him a patch from each of his ships/duty stations to sew on it. We have been able to find all except the Gurke. If any of you have a patch or two you can sell us please e-mail me ASAP, it would be greatly appreciated. By the way, because of him we are now a 3rd generation Navy family. I served in the submaring service, and my son is presently in nuclear power school back in Charleston, and will soon enter the sub service.....sorry to all you Tin-Can sailors....but there are only two kinds of ships....submarines and targets! :-) Thanks for any help, it really be greatly appreciated, the Gurke is near and dear to his heart! Comments: My father was Charles W. Watkins, from Westwood, CA, and served aboard the USS Gurke, approximately in the years listed. All that I know was that he was part of the Black Gang, maybe a fire controlman. I am looking for any information or shipmates that may remember Chuck and his service aboard ship. He did tell me one interesting story where he and a shipmate were attempting to run aft with a shitcan full of garbage, during some sort of a firing exercise. Apparently they ran underneath one of the 5" mounts, which they had been given permission to do, when it fired, and knocked both men either to the deck, or overboard. Any contact with shipmates of my dad would be appreciated.
