Years aboard Gurke: 1975 (Summer)
Comments: I was privileged and honored to serve in this great destroyer as a Midshipman 1/C during the Summer of 1975. I worked for LT's Bill (Cheng) Steussy, Bruce (Biceps) Plyer, and Jim (Gilly) Giblin. Just 6 months later, as a young Ensign in San Diego, I roomed with the legendary ENS Larry Strizich and LTJG Gene Baker. (Oh man, could I tell you some stories! Of course, if you knew these two gentlemen, nothing would surprise you). Up until my all-too-brief tour in USS GURKE, I had my heart set on flight school. She was the sole reason I chose to be a Surface Warfare Officer. The officers and crew, from CAP'N Ward on down, epitomized topnotch Tin Can Sailors. They truly lived the "Work hard, play hard" philosophy - they were consummate professionals and shore leave/liberty steamers. I will retire next year (2005) with nearly 30 years of service to our Navy and nation. My fond memories from that Summer training cruise are among my most treasured. I will take them to my grave. God bless all of you. FRAMS FOREVER! - Rick

Years aboard Gurke: May 58 to Dec. 58
Comments: Enjoyed my time aboard the Gurke albeit short especially in fact that the ship went to South America to escort the carrier Ranger around the Horn and up to Alameda to her new home port. After 3 wes pac cruises this was a most welcome change of scenery and new ports of call for me. As well as meeting new shipmates. The Gurke was my third TinCan and last before my hitch was up. I was proud then to be a Can sailor and prouder still today to have sailed on some of the finest fighting ships ever to sail the sea's. The world will never see the likes of those old Tin Cans that rode like bucking bronco's and made real sailors of land lubbers like me and my ship mates. It was a sad day for the U.S. Navy when the last old Fletcher, Sumner and Gearing class Cans went to the scrappers torch or used as targets. I still walk the decks of my old ships in my minds eye as I did so many years past. Especially at night in the south Pacific when the stars in the sky were so close it seemed one could reach out and touch them and the sound of the wind in the rigging was music to ones ears.
