Comments: Just found this site, great. Some of the names that had been put back in my mind all these years sure came back. Was a torpedoman 2nd Class, my 1st Class was LEO "MOOSE" SANGIOLO, what a guy. Sorry to here about Capt.Foote, I remember the day we got hit in the fantail, he had the CON. I was on the helm, what a day that was. Will check back again on this site, just wanted to say hi to my old ship mates. Keep up the good work on this site.CHARLIE B.

Comments: Thanks for putting together this web site. I lost my dad to emphysema a little over two years ago. He served on the USS Gurke DD 783 from about 1949 to 1951. His name was Luke Blackwelder, Jr. To his shipmates he was known as "Blackie". Within 24 hours of his death, another of his shipmates passed away from cancer. His name was Dale Savage. Dad kept in contact with Dale and two other mates for many years -- Mac Strickland and Bobby Slayton, both of whom have passed away.

Dad's experiences in the US Navy and being a part of the Korean Conflict was very important to him and something he proudly spoke of. He would have been delighted to see this web site. I have quite a few photographs in my possession that could be copied for anyone who may have served with Dad during that time. Let me know if I can help.

Keep up the good work.

Comments: When I finished bootcamp in San Diego (Company 458) I went aboard the USS Rowan DD782, this was in mid January of 1949. I was only on board the Rowan for three or four days and was transferred to the USS Gurke. I was assigned to the First Division which was berthed just below the mess hall. I was immediately assigned duty in the mess hall and given the job of working in the scullery. I am sure this was done because I was such a clean cut and upstanding young sailor. I was seventeen when I joined the navy. I'm not sure exactly what week or month but it was not long before we set sail for Yokosuka,Japan. The rest is history. I was reassigned to recomission the USS Laws DD558.
