Comments: Hey, this is a great site!! I am originally from Velva, ND. So,being on the USS Gurke meant just a little more to me. I served as an Operations Specialist (Radarman), finally attaining OS3. I remember vividly the Freedom Train Raids, the one night Captain Holly had to call the Commodore to suggest we turn off our running lights. I also remember the look on the face of Tim Raines when we took a schrapnel hit in the flag-bag directly above those of us in CIC, and a hole in one of our main deck doors. Those were the days. I know nobody enjoyed the controlling orders of superiors, but looking back, it was truely the best of times. We worked hard and played hard. I transfered to the USS Chicago CG-11 in late 1973, but the days on the Gurke, old Roadhouse, were the best. Such memories. Where have all the 'ol mates gone? These days I work at Idaho Power Company as a Financial Analyst. My wife Pam & I have 4 children most of them grown. Please feel free to contact me. Thanks.
