Comments: MY DAD DEWAYNE EDWARD OSBERG SERVED ON THE USS GURKE DURING THE KOREAN WAR. HE WAS A SONAR MAN AND ALWAYS SPOKE VERY HIGHLY OF HIS TIME SPENT ON BOARD. DAD DIED IN JUNE 1984 OF CANCER. WHILE GROWING UP AT HOME THERE WAS ALWAYS A PICTURE OF THE USS GURKE ON OUR LIVING ROOM WALL. HE WAS PROUD OF THAT SHIP AND THE MEN HE SERVED WITH AND IF HE WAS ALIVE TODAY I KNOW HE WOULD HAVE WANTED TO SIGN THE SHIPS LOG HIMSELF.

Name:Dick Snow
Where are you from?: San Diego, CA
Years aboard Gurke: 1952-1954
Comments: I was just looking at my USS Gurke cruise book for 1953. On a whim I thought I would look it up on the internet and there you were! I was a SN in Second Division and then went into the galley as a commissaryman. I was stationed on the Gurke from about 9-52 to 4-54. I now live in San Diego. Sorry I just now found out about your reunion. How did it go? If my memory serves me well I saw the Gurke for the last time here in San Diego in the 60's or 70's. I think it was given or sold to a South American government.

Anyway, I'd be glad to hear from you. I'm at rhsnowsr@aol.com.
Regards,
Dick Snow

Name:David Galster
Where are you from?: DeWitt, IA
Years aboard Gurke: 1974-1975
Comments: I was in the after engineroom, and for a while was in charge. I worked for Chief Pearson and MM1 Triniman. For a while I kept contact with both of them in late '70's. However, I haven't corresponded with either since then.

In 1988, I ran into James Shoemaker a former Fireman. He was working as a contractor in a plant where I work. I have not seen him in a few years, but believe he is in the Illinois-Iowa area.

Name:Earl C. Smoot
Where are you from?: Salinas, CA
Years aboard Gurke: 2/71-9/71
Comments: I came aboard the Gurke Feb. 1971 and left Sept. 71. She was a nice ship with a great Captain. Not so rigid like the 1st ship I was on for 3 years (USS Carpenter DD 825). The Carpenter had full Captains on them and was strict . When I reported aboard the Gurke I was surprised to see a mustanger serving as her commander. C u later Earl Smoot
